How to Get a Workers' Comp Certificate of Insurance the Same Day

When a general contractor tells you they need your workers' comp certificate of insurance before you can start the job Monday morning, the clock starts immediately. Missing that deadline doesn't just delay your project — it can cost you the contract entirely.
The good news: getting a workers' comp COI the same day is completely achievable if you work with the right agency. Here's how it works.
Why COI Deadlines Are So Urgent
General contractors and project owners require certificates of insurance for one reason: they need proof that their subcontractors are covered. If a sub gets hurt on the job and doesn't have their own WC, the GC's carrier picks up the tab — and the GC's experience mod takes the hit.
This is why GCs rarely accept delays. If you can't produce a COI, they'll find a sub who can.
How Same-Day Binding Works
When you call a licensed WC agency, the agent doesn't start from scratch. They have appointments with multiple carriers and access to real-time rating systems. For most contractor trades, the quoting process takes 10–15 minutes.
Once you approve the quote and make your first payment, the carrier binds coverage immediately. Your agency can then issue the ACORD 25 certificate of insurance — typically within minutes of binding.
What Information You Need Ready
To get quoted and bound same day, have this ready:
- Business name and FEIN (or SSN for sole props)
- Trade or type of work
- Estimated annual payroll (or total project payroll for a short-term policy)
- States where you operate
- Loss runs from the past 3–5 years (if available — not always required)
- The certificate holder's name and address
Understanding the ACORD 25 Form
The ACORD 25 is the standard certificate of insurance form recognized by virtually every GC, project owner, and licensing board in the country. It shows:
- Your business name and address
- The carrier and policy number
- Policy effective and expiration dates
- Workers' comp coverage limits
- Any additional insureds or certificate holders
Your agency fills this out and emails it to you and any certificate holders you specify.
Additional Insured Endorsements
On workers' comp policies, "additional insured" works a bit differently than on general liability. What most GCs actually want is a waiver of subrogation — an endorsement that prevents your WC carrier from going after the GC if a worker is injured and the GC is partly at fault.
This endorsement can be added same day in most cases. Just ask your agent when you call.
Digital COI Delivery
Once your coverage is bound and the certificate is issued, it's delivered as a PDF via email — to you and directly to any certificate holders you specify. Most GCs accept digital COIs without question.
What Can Delay Same-Day Issuance
While same-day is the standard for most contractors, a few situations can cause delays:
- High-hazard trades (roofing, demolition) that require manual carrier underwriting
- Very large payrolls that trigger additional review
- Severe prior loss history that requires underwriter sign-off
- Incomplete application information
For most contractors — especially those with moderate payrolls and clean or minor loss history — same-day issuance is the norm, not the exception.
